Bafana Bafana kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in style with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Angola in their Group B opener, played in Morocco. The win not only set the tone for South Africa’s tournament but also ended a long-standing drought, marking their first opening-game victory at AFCON in 21 years.
South Africa started the match with confidence and purpose, pressing Angola early and showing clear attacking intent. Their efforts paid off in the 21st minute when Oswin Appollis found the back of the net, giving Bafana Bafana a deserved lead. The goal lifted the team’s momentum and saw them control large spells of the first half.
However, Angola responded with determination. In the 35th minute, Show capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the score, reminding South Africa that AFCON matches are rarely straightforward. The equaliser shifted the balance of the game, and both teams went into halftime locked at 1–1.
The second half was tense and highly competitive, with chances at both ends. Angola looked dangerous on the counter, while Bafana Bafana showed patience and discipline, refusing to panic. Coach Hugo Broos made key tactical adjustments, urging his players to stay compact while continuing to push forward.
The decisive moment arrived in the 79th minute when Lyle Foster struck the winning goal, sending South African supporters into celebration. The goal proved to be the difference, as Bafana Bafana defended resolutely in the closing stages to secure all three points.
After the match, coach Hugo Broos praised his team’s resilience and mental strength, highlighting their ability to respond after conceding and to stay focused until the final whistle. The victory is a significant confidence booster as South Africa looks to make a strong statement in the tournament.
Bafana Bafana will now turn their attention to a crucial Group B clash against Egypt on 26 December. With a historic opening win behind them, South Africa will be hoping to build momentum and take another step toward AFCON 2025 success.
